Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, Walter Reed Military Research Institute, and a team of collaborators have first observed that the risk of multiple sclerosis (increases multiple times after infection with the Epstein-Barr virus). This conclusion involved EBV as the cause of multiple sclerosis. An online study presented in the edition of the Journal of Annals of Neuroscience, will appear in a subsequent print edition.

Hundreds of thousands of people without EBV have been followed for several years through repeated blood samples groups. The researchers are then able to determine the time when individuals of the EBV infection and their relationship to MS onset. “The recruitment of individuals before, they were infected with the EBV virus and follow up with them for several years is a critical aspect of the methodology that makes this study qualitatively different from all previous work,” said Alberto Escherio, senior author of the study and professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and Professor Medicine at Harvard Medical School ..
MS is a chronic degenerative disease in the central nervous system. Women are more likely than men to get the disease and this is the most common neurological disorder in young adults. Although genetic predisposition plays an important role in determining sensitivity, previous studies have shown that environmental factors are equally important.
EBV is a herpes virus and one of the most common human and human viruses, and infection in early childhood is common and usually asymptomatic. Infection at a later age, however, often causes mononucleosis. In the United States, up to 95% of adults are HIV-positive, but symptom-free. EBV has been associated with some types of cancer and can cause serious complications when the immune system is suppressed, for example, in transplant recipients. There is no effective treatment for EBV.
This is the first study based on longitudinal follow-up for several thousand individuals who were not infected with EBV at the time of recruitment. The study population consisted of the actual service of the US Army, Navy, Marine Corps and personnel who had at least one blood sample taken in the Defense Department warehouse. Electronic databases of physical disability agencies of the US Army and Navy and then searched for people in the records, to the existence of it:
It is possible to diagnose MS between 1992 and 2004 ..
The researchers chose 305 individuals with a diagnosis of MS, who had collected blood samples before their diagnosis. Two controls for each case were then selected from the serum database and offset by the service branch, sex, blood collection date, age, and blood collection time.
The study found that MS risk is very low among individuals not infected with the EBV virus, but it increases sharply in the same individuals following EBV infection. “The observation that MS did not happen until after EBV is a big step forward,” said Alberto Escherio. “Until now we knew that all MS patients were infected with EBV, but we can not exclude two non-causal explanations for these facts: that the EBV infection is the result and not the cause of MS disease, and that individuals who can negative EBV can be genetically resistant For MS, both of these interpretations are inconsistent with current results, “said Asherio:
There is now sufficient and convincing evidence to justify allocating more resources to develop interventions targeting EBV infection, or an immune response to EBV infection. These can contribute to the prevention of MS, “he said, and the study was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke My brain.
